Roy S. Overman, Lifetime Resident, Died Wednesday

Roy S. Overman, 76, life time resident and former businessman of Keosauqua, died at his home about 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 25. He had been in ill health for about a year.

Mr. Overman was born at Keosauqua July 19, 1882, the son of James and Lydia Strickling Overman. He was married to Phyllis Roberts of Keosauqua in November of 1911, who survives.

His father, James Overman operated a bakery in the early days of Keosauqua and later handled a line of groceries and meats. He sold the business about 1930 to Roy, who had been a traveling salesman 24 years for J.B. Hutchison & Co. of Ottumwa. He spent a total of 48 years in road salesmanship, nine of which were with Sprague Warner of Chicago. Beginning in 1951, Mr. Overman served as an Inspector for the Iowa State Commerce Commission with his territory comprising seven counties in southeastern Iowa. He resigned the position effective March 1, 1958.

Mr. Overman, in his early years, took part in many of the activities of Keosauqua, including the town band, football team and was a member of the school board for four years. He is a past master of Keosauqua Lodge No. 10, A.F. & A.M. and a member for more than 50 years. Mr. Overman is also a past high priest of Moore Chapter, Royal Arch Masons, and a past commander of El Chanan Commandery, Knights Templar. He was a member of the Congregational church.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Ronald C. Hill of Omaha, Neb.; a sister, Miss Bess Overman of Keosauqua and two granddaughters. A son, James R. Overman, died in February of 1938.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, March 28, at 2 p.m. in the Keosauqua Congregational church with Rev. John A. Nye of the Methodist church officiating. Interment was in Purdom cemetery.

The Knights Templar Commandery escort for the funeral included two Past Grand Commanders, J.J. Pelmulder and Earl Daggett of Ottumwa; Grand Junior Warden Guyman Wilsey, Glen Barge and Joe Hinshaw of Keokuk; Past Grand Guard Donald Wolfe, Harold Davis, Dan Winters and Howard Pitman of Mt. Pleasant; Harley Holmes, Ted Watson, Elvin Edwards and Elmer Knowles of the Fairfield Commandery and Commander John Vandenberg, Clyde Kerr, George Sellers, Alden Doud, Roy Watkins, Bates Manning, Leslie Fahrner, J.L. Cunningham, Clark Barnett and A.J. Secor of the Keosauqua Commandery.

She survives. he was a former grocer and traveling salesman. Later he was employed by the Iowa State Commerce commission. He retired in 1958. He was a member of the Congregational church and the Keosauqua Masonic orders.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Ronald C. Hill of Omaha, Neb.; a sister, Miss Bess Overman of Keosauqua; and two granddaughters. A son, James R. Overman, died in February of 1938.

Funeral services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Congregational church here with the Rev. John A. Nye of the Methodist church in charge. Burial will be in Purdom cemetery.
