Mary Jack Norris

Mary Ellen Brown was born in Birmingham, Iowa Feb. 25th, 1854. She was educated in the public schools of Birmingham, and in Wolf's Academy also in Birmingham. She entered the profession of teaching and for a number of years was engaged in the Public schools of Keosauqua as primary teacher.

Later she for several years was County Superintendent of schools for Van Buren County.

When Chapter I, P.E.O. was organized at Keosauqua she was one of its charter members.

A devoted Christian, she was a member of the Methodist church, but in later years attended the Presbyterian Church at Birmingham.

In 1887 she was married to George W. Jack of Bentonsport, residing on a farm near that place. Mr. Jack died in March 1908.

Following his death she resided for a time in Bentonsport, then became a book-keeper in the store of her brother, D.W. Brown, in New London. Afterwards she resided in Keosauqua and Cantril.

In February 1924 she was married to H.W.B. Norris of Hastings, Nebraska. They resided there until 1929 when she and her husband moved to Birmingham which place was their home until Mr. Norris' death in January, 1938.

Following the death of Mr. Norris she was unable, owing to her advancing age to maintain her home in Birmingham and for the past few months she has lived with Mrs. E.M. West at 306 East Madison Street in Fairfield, where her spirit took its flight in the early morning hours of May 18th, 1939.

Funeral services were conducted in the Burnett Funeral home at Keosauqua May 19th by Howard C. Irvine, pastor of the Birmingham Presbyterian Church. Interment in the Maple Hill Cemetery at Birmingham.
