Train-Truck Fatality

MOUNT PLEASANT - Paul I. Wilson, 52, Mount Pleasant, formerly of Bonaparte, was killed at 11:10 a.m. Saturday, May 4, in a train-truck collision 2 1/4 miles northeast of Mount Pleasant.

Reports said the Burlington-Northern train was traveling west when it hit the cement mixing truck driven by Wilson which was north-bound. The cab and mixer were split apart and Wilson was thrown from the cab. He was killed instantly.

C.D. England, Galesburg, engineer, said his train was traveling about 60 miles per hour when he saw the truck on the tracks. He said emergency brakes were applied but the train was unable to stop before the collision.

The front diesel unit of the train was damaged. It was replaced by another unit sent to the scene and the train continued on to Ottumwa.

Funeral services for the accident victim will be Tuesday, May 7, at 2 p.m. at the Bonaparte Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Charles Tweed in charge. Burial will be in the Bonaparte Cemetery.

Members of the family will receive friends tonight at the Carl Wilson Reposing Home in Bonaparte from 7 to 9 p.m.

Miller-Hofbaurer Funeral Home in Farmington is in charge of the service.
