W.B. NEWBOLD, Sr. FUNERAL TODAYFuneral services for W.B. Newbold, Sr., 76, prominent Van Buren county attorney for almost half a century, were held at the Methodist church Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock. the Rev. M.E. Hayes of Creston, a former pastor in Keosauqua, and the Rev. Treverton Warren, pastor of the Keosauqua Methodist church, officiated. Music was by the Williams Brothers quartet, with Mrs. L.B. Liddy as organist.
Intermnet was made in the Purdom cemetery in Keosauqua, with Burnett Funeral Home in charge. The honorary pallbearers were the four judges of this judicial district, E.L. Simmons of Centerville, H.V. Lewis of Chariton, E.K. Daugherty of Ottumwa and H.C. Taylor of Bloomfield; and Van Buren County Attorneys A.L. Heminger, Jo S. Stong, A.L. Doud, W.G. McConnell, R.R. McBeth, J.W. McGrath. Active bearers were S.M. Workman, R.E. Pickard, C.P. Barker, G.B. Reutzel, R.R. Dorothy and E.C. Dorothy.
The death of "Pop" Newbold, as he was affectionately known by all who knew him, came suddenly Monday morning and was a profound shock to the community. A client had just left the office shortly after 10 o'clock on Monday, and his wife, Mrs. Emily L. Newbold, found him slumped on the edge of his desk.
Dr. Francis McIntosh was called immediately and came at once to the residence. Death occurred about 10:30 o'clock.
Willis Boyd Newbold was born January 6, 1870, on a farm two and one-half miles southwest of Hillsboro in Cedar Township.
In the class of 1898, he was graduated from the Law School of the University of Iowa, and began practice in Farmington.
In 1907, the same year his wife was admitted to the bar, they moved to Keosauqua and set up their law office.
Throughout his life "Pop" had a deep interest in public affairs. He was elected as county attorney in 1911 and served until 1915, and was again elected to this office in 1919 and served until 1923. He was mayor of Keosauqua for five terms, 1936 and 1946 and was ex-officio Justice at the time of his death. He served as a member and was president of the School Board in Keosauqua for a number of years.
He was a past president of the Second Judicial District Bar Association and was current president of the Van Buren County group. At one time he was a Mason and a member of the Odd Fellows. He was a nephew of Joshua Newbold, a former governor of Iowa.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Emily L. Newbold; three sons, Cyrus Newbold of Centerville, Joseph Newbold and W.B. Newbold, Jr., of Keosauqua; two daughters, Katherine Newbold of Keosauqua, and Mrs. Harry Berg of Durham, New Hampshire; two brothers, O.C. and G.E. Newbold of Hillsboro; and one sister, Dr. Belle Wright of Fairfield.
