ASA Jones Rites Set

KILBOURN - Asa Jones, 96, retired farmer and former longtime sawmill operator, died Sunday at the Masonic Nursing Home in Bettendorf. He had been in failing health for about three years after suffering a broken hip.

Jones spent most of his life operating sawmills in Van Buren and Jefferson Counties. He cut ties for railroads as a young man, and cleared many acres of land during his logging operations.

Following his retirement from the sawmill business, he made his home in Kilbourn in Van Buren County where he turned his attention to gardening, a hobby he pursued until his injury.

Last rites will be Tuesday, March 5, at 2 p.m. at the Birmingham United Methodist Church with the Rev. David Kennedy officiating. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery with the Pedrick Funeral Home at Douds in charge of arrangements. Masonic rites will be at the cemetery.

Jones was a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 10 at Keosauqua. His marriage to Effie Lee took place May 8, 1901, at Glasgow. She passed away in April, 1931.

Survivors include four sons and four daughters: John, Kilbourn; William, Fairfield; J.R. Jones, Birmingham; and Stanley, Des Moines; Mrs. Lester Williams, Birmingham; Mrs. Clark Barnett, Cantril; Mrs. Weldon Wright, Maitland, Fla.; and Mrs. William Stark, Claremore, Okla.

A number of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren also survive.

He was preceded in death, in addition to his wife, by one daughter and an infant son.
