Caroline Marie Pencil, age 78 of Birmingham, died July 7, 2015, at the Jefferson County Health Center in Fairfield.

Caroline was born December 28, 1936, at Bad Axe, MI, the daughter of Edward and Edna Laughlin Leyden.

She lived most of her life in the Birmingham community and graduated from Birmingham High School in 1954, where she lettered in basketball.

Caroline married Lawrence Pencil on February 5, 1955, in Fairfield.

She had worked at the Fairfield Glove Factory and at J - Mart convenience store in Birmingham. She was a bus driver for the Van Buren County Schools for 16 years.

Caroline owned and operated a ceramic shop and had served on the Birmingham City Council for 10 years.

Caroline enjoyed sewing, camping, cooking, ceramics and spending time with her grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Dwayne Leyden.

Surviving are her husband Larry; two daughters, Debra (Marlon) Wolver and Dixie Pencil, all of Birmingham; one son, Charles (Olwen) Pencil of Sonoma, CA; her five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was held July 11 at the Raymond Funeral Home in Birmingham with Larry Smith officiating.

Arrangements were in the care of Raymond Funeral Home in Birmingham.
