OU Law School Founder Is Dead

Dr. Julien C. Monnet, 83, founder and dean of the University of Oklahoma school of law 32 years, died at 7 p.m. Saturday in St. Anthony hospital. He had been hospitalized since he fell and broke a hip Easter Sunday.

Dr. Monnet organized the school in 1909, and under his leadership it grew from infancy to the present standing as one of the best law schools in the nation. Before retiring as dean emeritus in 1941, Dr. Monnet handed out a total of 1,569 law degrees.

Born in Keosauqua, Iowa, Dr. Monnet was a first generation American. His parents moved to the United States from France just shortly before he was born. He attended the University of Iowa, and the Iowa university law school.

After his graduation, he entered private law practice but later quit to become a professor of law. He studied at Harvard for three years then accepted a professorship in the law school at George Washington university, Washington, D.C.

In 1909 he came to OU to establish a one-room law school by "moving the exhibits in the geology museum closer together for class space."

In 1913 the present law building was completed, and dedicated as "Monnet hall." As the school enlarged over the years, Dr. Monnet managed to continue teaching several classes in addition to handling the administrative work of the school.

He is survived by his wife, Helen, of the home, 772 DeBarr, Norman; two sons, Claude Monnet, 1600 Drury lane, and Eugene Monnet, Tulsa; a daughter, Mrs. Florence McKown, 1527 NW 35; a sister, Mrs. Charles S.B. Smith, Chicago; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Arrangements are pending and will be announced by Hahn-Cook funeral home here.
