Lela F. McLeland, 87, of Oskaloosa, and formerly of Cedar Rapids, died Friday July 21, 1995, at the Mahaska County Hospital in Oskaloosa.
She was born July 3, 1908, at Palisade, Nebraska, the daughter of Leon (Lon) and Dora Barker McLeland. After the death off her father in Nebraska in 1918, the family returned to Milton, Iowa. Following her graduation from Milton High School, she attended the Fort Madison Business College. She worked for the Des Moines Register office in Burlington, and then the Milton Herald. In 1930, she moved to Cedar Rapids and worked as a bookkeeper for Rappaport Auto Parts until retiring. She moved from Cedar Rapids to Oskaloosa in October 1993.
She is survived by a sister, Hazel Sherwood of Oskaloosa (and formerly of Cedar Rapids); two nephews and their wives, Rev. Morgan and Sandy McLeland of Barrington, Illinois, and Jan and Lu McLeland of Oskaloosa; 5 great nephews and 2 great nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Eldred McLeland, one sister, Gladys Belle McLeland Mitchell, and two nephews, Floyd Dwight Mitchell, and David Sherwood.
The body has been cremated. Memorial services were held Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. in the First Christian Church in Oskaloosa with the Rev. Morgan McLeland officiating. Memorials may be made to either the First Christian Church or Hospice of Mahaska County. The Bates Funeral Chapel, Oskaloosa, was in charge of the arrangements.
