Wallace Cavitt

Wallace Cavitt, eldest son of James and Martha McWilliams Cavitt, was born at the family home near Mount Sterling, Iowa on Nov. 18, 1863, and died at the Ferris Nursing Home in Fort Madison, Iowa, May 2, 1950.

During most of his lifetime, he enjoyed the best of health, but in the last few years his eyesight failed completely; his health broke and he was forced to spend almost all of his last two years in the Sacred Heart hospital and in the nursing home.

His only formal education was that which he obtained in the rural school of his community, but love of reading and his interest in world affaris won for him the reputation of being one of the best informed persons in his neighborhood.

Wallace enjoyed caring for livestock and gave thought and study to the development of both purebred horses and cattle.

His creed for living was well expressed in the words of the poet: "He went his way so patiently and kind; A cheery word or smile, a friendly deed; From day to day along life's winding road He lived his creed.

Today etermity has opened wide its doors - From him all cares and cloudy skies are gone He glimpse the shining pathway that ascends Behind the dawn."

He was preceded in death by his father and mother and by his only brother, Bruce. His closest remaining relatives are: his sister-in-law Mrs. Bruce Cavitt of Oskaloosa, Iowa; his cousins, Dean McWilliams of Springfield, Ore.; Jim McWilliams of Halsey, Ore.; Mrs. Carrie Ong and William Ford of Portland, Ore.; Mrs. Nell Cook and Mrs. William Hopp of Kahoka, Mo; Mrs. Nathan Wells of Powersville, Mo.; and James McWilliams of Revere, Mo.

Funeral services were conducted at the Acasto Community Church, Thurday, May 4, at 2 o'clock, by the Rev. Homer Dalrymple. Keith Gaston sang accompanied by his wife at the piano.

Pallearers were Clyde Gaston, Gilbert Bell, Leonard Nixon, Harvey Sulivan, John Sherry and Ira Parks.

Burial was in the Blacklegde Cemetery on the Cavitt homestead.
