Iowa Bird Painter is Dead.
Salem. July 14. [1908] – William Savage, who resided near here, is dead. He was a man little known for one who had so distinguished himself as a naturalist. He had captured and painted in water colors practically every bird that has ben or may be found in Iowa since Mr. Savage settled in the state in the early ‘50’s. The late Charles Aldrich once visited him at his home and inspected his paintings, characterizing Mr. Savage as a genius of the type of Thoreau. A portion of the collection of paintings was last year exhibited at the Iowa state fair and attracted wide attention.
