Julia Agusta Waterman, eldest daughter of Hyrus Waterman and Julia Manwaring Bailey Waterman and granddaughter of the last Dr. Gideon S. Bailey and his first wife Julia Manwaring Bailey, was born in Vernon, Iowa, December 20, 1867 and passed away at the home of her sister, Mrs. Anna Murphy in Brookpark, Minnesota, October 12, 1930, at the age of 62 years, 9 months and 22 days.

Left motherless at the age of 9 years, she with her two sisters were taken into their grandfather Bailey’s home who was kind and generous always. In August 1883, their beloved father was able to take them and care for them; again in Nov. 1892, the father’s home in Vernon was burned to the ground and in Dec. 27 of that same year her father was called to his reward. In 1894, Julia and her sister Grace went east to visit relatives in Conn. Grace came home the following spring, but Julia stayed until May 1904 when she returned to her sister’s home in Bentonsport, Iowa, and went with them when they moved to Brookpark, Minn., in 1910. She began teaching school at the age of 17 years, her first term being at Bear Creek School and she has taught in three states, Iowa, Minnesota and North Dakota. Her health gradually failed and on Nov. 19, 1928 she was stricken with paralysis and was bedridden and helpless since then until her death.

Surviving relatives are two sisters, Mrs. A.G. Murphy and Miss Grace G. Waterman of Brookpark, Minn., and niece and nephews as follows” Mrs. A.R. Zugler of Brookpark, Minn.; Mrs. A.G. Elderman of Cambridge, Minn.; Miss Percie Murphy of Azo, Ariaona; Fred Murphy of Brookpark, Minn.; and Gurdon Murphy of Backus, Minn. Also six grand nephews and 3 grand nieces and many friends.

Funeral services were held at the Methodist church in Brookpark, Tuesday, October 14, 1930, at 2:00 with Rev. Elsie Hartman officiating and the mortal remains were laid to rest in the beautiful burying grounds there.
