Walter T. Dow

Walter Talbot, older son of Caleb Wells and Sarah Whitam Dow, was born Jan. 3, 1858, on the Dow farm, 1 1/2 miles east of Stockport, where he grew to manhood. He attended the Morris school near Stockport and the Wolf Academy at Birmingham. After which he operated a general store and post office at Wilsonville.

On May 26, 1881, he was united in marriage with Mary Jane Harlan. After the narrow gage railway was built from Ft. Madison to Ottumwa, he moved his store and post office to McVeigh, where their only daughter, Pearl Ida, was born Feb. 19, 1884.

He moved from McVeigh to Chicago, Ill., where he was in business for about ten years. He then moved back to Stockport, where he farmed for several years, later moving in to Stockport, where he operated a Creamery. He then returned to Chicago, making his home with his daughter.

His death came suddenly on Dec. 14, 1936, at the age of 78 years, 11 months, and 11 days. He leaves to mourn his loss, his wife; his daughter, Mrs. Pearl Morris; 7 grand children, Mrs. Irene Tucker, Walter, Mathew, Dow, Eleanor, Rex, and Harold Morris; 2 great-grand children, Marcella and Carol Morris; all of Chicago, Ill.; one brother, Bryant of Keosauqua, Ia.; and one niece, Mrs. Dove Winslow, of Stockport, Ia. Two sisters, two grand children and one nephew preceded him in death.

Funeral services were held at Stockport M.E. church at 10 a.m. Dec. 17, 1936, in charge of Rev. M.E. Hayes of Keokuk. Interment at Spencer cemetery.
