Berniece Irene Throckmorton 1920-2014

Berniece Irene Throckmorton, 94, daughter of George and Isabelle Goben, was born on May 28, 1920, in Lucas, Iowa, and died on July 3 , 2014, at the Corydon Nursing and Rehab Center where she had been a resident for 11 days. Berniece grew up and attended school in Lucas. She married Kenneth (Barney) Throckmorton in 1939.

Berniece and Barney and their four children, Gloria, Fred, David and John, lived in Chariton and Madrid, Iowa, before moving to their farm west of Derby in 1947. Berniece was a busy housewife, always having a large garden and helping with farm chores. The family moved into Derby in 1955.

After her family was raised Berniece was very active in the Green Thumb Garden Club. The Derby Park was one of her passions where she spent countless hours digging, planting and weeding flowerbeds.

In 2001, Berniece moved to Southgate Apartments in Chariton. Her hobbies were reading, crocheting, jigsaw puzzles. She spent many hours arranging and rearranging fiowers, both fresh and artificial. She loved visiting with family and friends.

Berniece was a member of the Community of Christ Church in Chariton, where she attended faithftullu until her health prevented her from getting out.

Berniece was preceded in death by her parents; eight brothers and sisters; husband, Barney; daughter and son-in-law, Gloria and Carl Vinson; daughter-in-law, Cindy Throckmorton; and an infant granddaughter. She leaves to cherish the memory, her three sons; Fred (Joyce) Throckmorton, Dave (Linda) Throckmorton and John Throckmorton; eight grandchildren: Terry Vinson, Suzanne Connor, Julie Jolly, Tom, Brian and Jason Throckmorton, and David and Brian Poggemiller; 12 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends. Also a longtime childhood friend of the boys, Bruce Hawkins of Berkley, California. He always referred to Berniece as his “Iowa Mom” and made a special trip to Iowa to see her in 2013.

In accordance with her Wishes, there will be no funeral service. A family graveside service will be held at a later date.
