Jonathan Downs Rowland was born November 4, 1853, on a farm one mile southwest of Milton, Iowa, and passed from this life at his home in Milton on March 3, 1921, at the age of 67 years, 3 months and 29 days. He was the youngest of the seven children of Samuel Painter and Elizabeth Russell Rowland. Only two of the seven survive, Robert R. and Mary E. Rowland, both of this place.

On September 27, 1882, he was united in marriage with Mary Cooper Claflin at Olathe, Kansas. To this union were born three sons Lamar H., of Milton, Morris D. of Libby, Montana, and Ambler who died in infancy.

Mr. Rowland has been for many years one of the most prominent and influential business men of this town. The firm of Rowland Brothers formed by him and his brother Robert, was established in 1876. He has been connected with the Citize[blotted out] since 1887 and president of it since January, 1892.
