The Rev. Paul S. Apfel, pastor at Woodbine, Iowa, since September, died in Des Moines, January 14 following an operation. He was fifty-six years of age. The Rev. Mr. Apfel was born in Jaroslo, Galacia, Austria, in 1881, was converted in Germany, came to America and worked his way through the Salvation Army college a Patterson, N.J., being graduated as a lieutenant. After serving the Salvation Army for 10 years he began preaching in the M.E. Church near Keokuk, Ia., later poined(sp) the Iowa Conference, and served at Hillsboro, Montrose, Fairfield Circuit, Oakville, Muscatine South, Burlington Circuit, Keosauqua, Kalena, Mediapolis, Donnellson, Pleasantville, Afton and Woodbine, a total of twenty-three years. He witnessed more than twenty-five conversions a year for thirty-three years in Christian service.
The Rev. Mr. Apfel is survived by his widow; five children: Mrs. Anna Neffeneger, Woodbine; Herman M. Apfel, Chicago; Mrs. Ruth Damm, Donnellson, Iowa; and Prudence and Maxine at home; a brother, Joseph Apfel, and a sister, Mrs. Jennie Killander, both of New York City, and five grandchildren.
Funeral services held at Woodbine were in charge of the Rev. W.H. Meredith, district superintendent. The Rev. Mr. Apfel's former district superintendent, the Rev. A.H. Barker, of Creston, Iowa, preached the sermon, and other friends assisted in the service. Forty-six ministers and wives attended the service.
