E.T. Butlin of Texas Accidently Electrocuted

The Beaumont, Texas, Journal contains the following particulars of the death of E.T. Butlin of that city, formerly of Croton, this county, and well known in Fort Madison, Mrs. E.T. Graf, a sister, being a resident of that city:

In attempting to turn on the electric light in the bathroom at his home, 2510 Calder avenue, about 2:30 o'clock this morning, E.T. Butlin a prominent real estate dealer of this city was electrocuted.

He had gone to the bathroom with his little daughter, Jane, aged three years. The rest of the household was asleep. When he attempted to turn on the light, his fingers came in contact with the metal part of the light bulb and the electric shock paralyzed him. Still standing, his boy leaned back against the wall and the child dropped from his arms uninjured. The cries of the babe awakened Mrs. Butlin who hurried to the bath room to find the lifeless body of her husband standing in darkness against the wall.

Mrs. Butlin attempted several times to call a physician over the phone but was unsuccessful. She ran from the house and down Calder avenue several blocks to the home of Dr. Mabry. He at once returned to her home with her and later Dr. Regan arrived but Mr. Butlin had been for some time beyond medical aid. It is believed he was killed instantly.

Learning that her husband was dead Mrs. Butlin was prostrate with grief. To quiet her the physician administered anesthetics under the influence of which she rested easier. It is feared the shock will result seriously.

Mr. Butlin was 43 years old. He was born in Iowa but had lived in Beaumont ????? years. He came here as agent for the Santa Fe about eight years ago launched out into the real estate business and later organized the firm of the Butlin Realty Company, establishing offices in the Blanchette building. He was a thirty-second degree Mason and was one of the best known and highly respected business men of Beaumont.

Besides the widow, Mt. Butlin leaves three children, Rodney, aged 15, Della B., aged 5, and Jane aged 3. He is also survived by a mother, who lives in Croton, Lee county, Iowa; one brother in Iowa, another in Chicago and three sisters.
