George F. Lane
George F. Lane, former councilman of the town of Haworth, N.J., and an active figure in the public life during a residence there of 22 years, died Tuesday morning, April 14th at the Polyclinic hospital in New York City, a victim at the age of 60 years of meningitis following a minor operation. He was born in Davis Co., Iowa, in 1876 and came with his parents to Van Buren County, Iowa when but a few weeks old. Here he grew to young manhood. He graduated in the Keosauqua high school with the class of 1893 and studied 3 years at West Point. He taught in a private school in Connecticut for a year or two. Later we went into business in New York City as Commercial Photographer. He was married to Miss Ella Leurzapf in Dec. 1903.
They resided in Brooklyn, N.Y. a number of years, moving to Haworth in 1914. Mr. Lane at once became prominent in municipal affairs. A strong citizen, his bearing and demeanor reflected his military training. As a municipal official and leader he showed those qualities of courage and character which mark our military men.
He was a member of the local Shade Tree Cimmission(sp) at the time of his death.
Mayor Osmers ordered the Municipal flag at halfmast for 15 days. Mr. Lane was converted and joined the M.E. church in childhood. Later he joined the Congregational church at Haworth where a simple funeral service was held before a large gathering of friends and neighbors Thursday evening, April 16th.
Besides his widow he leaves two brothers and three sisters: Edgar of Keosauqua; Alvis of Seattle, Wash.; Mrs. Estella Wright of Keosauqua; Mrs. Ora DeFord of Los Angeles, Calif.; Mrs. Lena Bennett of Morrowville, Kansas.
