MRS. JOHN STORY

Lena Hazel Spurgin, daughter of Edward and Artie Barnett Spurgin, was born at Beacon, Mahaska county, Iowa, on March 13, 1889, and passed into eternity Dec. 19, 1949, aged 60 years, 9 months and 6 days.

She came with her parents to Farmington when 15 years of age, and finished her education in the rural schools of Lee county. She was united in marriage to john H. Story in Farmington in 1908. To this union were born two children, Clifford Merle Story and Hazel Maxine Bregenzer. Clifford preceded his mother in death May 23, 1947, and other departed are her parents, her brother Walter Spurgin, and a sister, Mae Marshall.

Surviving to mourn her loss are her husband, her daughter, two grandchildren, Doris Marie Story and Deloris Charlene Bergenzer, and five sisters, as follows: Mrs. James (Maude) Thomas of Cuba, Ill., Mrs. Ollie (Nellie) Hammond of Chicago Heights, Ill., Mrs. Leo (Grace) Hassler of Kirby, Oregon, Mrs. John (Lolo) McDonald of Joliet, Ill., and Mrs. O. C. (Bessie) Orick, of Executer, Calif.; one brother, Charles Spurgin of Marshalltown, Iowa and many loving nieces and nephews.

Lena’s span of life is a beautiful story of true nobility. She never faltered in her love for her husband, her children and her aged mother. Their care being her constant devotion.

But her loving ministrations were not confined alone to her family circle, as for many years of her life she gave unselfishly of her time to caring for many of Farmington’s citizens who were enfeebled by age, hence helpless and lonely.

Her’s is a finished course of true womanhood and worthy of her eternal reward.

“Passing out of the shadow
Into a purer light;
Stepping behind the curtain,
Getting a clearer sight.
Passing out of the shadow
Into eternal day,
Why do we call it dying,
This gentle going away?”

Services were Thursday, Dec. 22, at 2 p.m. at the Farmington Methodist church, in charge of Rev. J. S. Ellis and Rev. Fay Marriott. Interment was in Greenglade cemetery, Farmington.
