Sherman Morris Dies Monday After Short Illness

Sherman Morris died Monday evening, Feb. 23, at his home northeast of Stockport after a serious illness of about five days.

He was a son of Henry T. and Sally Ann Spencer Morris, born Dec. 30, 1864. He was united in marriage with Mattie C. Harlan, Nov. 12, 1885, at Keosauqua. For 13 consecutive winters he taught in the public schools and in 1895-96 he taught the first term of public school ever held in Stockport.

He held several position of trust in Cedar township, where he made his home all his life, and was also county supervisor of Van Buren county from 1932 and 1935.

He was active in planning and building the Morris Memorial park and cabins to preserve heirlooms of furniture, records, machinery etc., on the original Morris homestead site where his grandfather Morris settled in 1838.

He is survived by his widow; one son, Harlan R. Morris of Stockport; and five brothers, Arthur, Pitt, William, John H. and Elmer R. Two brothers, Charles and Frank, preceded him in death.

Funeral services were held at the late home Wednesday afternoon. Interment in Spencer cemetery.
