YOUTH DROWNED IN CREEK FLOOD

Harold Standley of Stockport Lost Life in Cedar Creek Monday Evening.

Harold Standley was drowned on Monday evening in the flood water of Cedar creek north of Stockport. He and Frank McLaughlin, son of John McLaughlin, and Mervin Donald, son of Ed. Donald had gone to Cedar river about four miles north of Stockport to see the flood. The had then decided to go swimming.

Harold is said to have been a good swimmer and when he first called for help his friends thought he was joking. When they realized his great danger it was then too late to give him aid.

The drowning occurred in Jefferson county at what is known as the N.L. Smith ford. Boats and grappling irons were secured as soon as possible and men have secured as soon as possible and men have worked constantly to locate the body but up to this time their efforts have been futile.

Jefferson county officials were notified, but will have no official connection with the drowning until the body is found.

Harold was a junior in Stockport high school. His age was seventeen years. His father, Will Standley, died about a year ago.

This is the fourth young man to lose his life by drowning this June in Jefferson county. George Melconian, Herber Messer and Paul Kearns were drowned in Crow Creek near Fairfield on June 4th.

A call was issued on Wednesday evening for 200 men to meet on Thursday morning to assist in the search for the body.

Obituary of Harold E. Standley

Herold[sic] Elmer Standley, son of Will and Mabel Standley, was born March 15, 1908, near Salem, Iowa, and departed this life, June 15, 1925, at the age of 17 years and 3 months.

He was converted during the revival services at the Methodist church at Stockport, December 19, 1923, and united with the church at that time. He has been a faithful member and was secretary of the Sunday school and a regular attendant thereof.

He had just finished his Junior year in Stockport high school and was dearly loved by his classmates.

While at the creek bathing with other boys, the stream being to swift for him, his body was taken beneath the current and his life was gone.

He leaves to mourn their loss a mother, four brothers and one sister, his father having preceded him in death about 18 months. He will be sadly missed in his home, in church and in the school, and by all who knew him.
