JOHN L. JOHNSON

John Leasure Johnson was born March 12, 1859 in Clark County, Missouri, and passed away February 28, 1949, at his home in Farmington, Iowa. His age at the time of passing was just a few days short of his 90th birthday.

Mr. Johnson was a son of Rev. William G. Johnson and Sarah Leasure Johnson. There were 11 other brothers and sisters in the family.

At the age of 3, Mr. Johnson’s family moved to a farm near Montrose, Iowa. After remaining there for a few years, they moved to another farm near Croton. This farm is known as the old home place, because Mr. Johnson spent approximately 75 years of his life there; with the exception of the time he and his brother drove a team of mules from here to near Dodge City, Kansas, where they both homesteaded. Mr. Johnson only stayed there 3 years, and then returned to the home place again.

John was a member of the Presbyterian Church as a result of infant baptism.

On June 14, 1890, Mr. Johnson was united in marriage to Miss Cora Belle Saltzgaver, and as a result 5 children were born to this union; 3 having preceded their father in death. Those remaining are Mrs. Edith McFarland of Davenport, Iowa, and Mrs. Garrett Deere of Farmington, Iowa.

Surviving besides his wife and two daughters are two brothers, Mr. W. H. Johnson of Lakin, Kansas, C. E. Johnson of Farmington; 5 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren, 5 nephews and nieces, as well as a host of intimate friends.

The expression that remained among the family was that Mr. Johnson had indeed been a kind and loving father and husband.

Services will be held at the Methodist Church in Croton Thursday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Forrest Backous delivering the message, and Rev, Harold Thomas, assisting. Burial will be in the Croton Cemetery. The five grandsons will act as pallnearers.
