Veteran Railroader At Eldon Succumbs
**Handwritten: July 15 1944ELDON.--William W. Friend, 75, died at 10:15 p.m. Saturday at his home in Eldon after being ill since June 7.
He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Friend and was born March 16, 1869, at Millersburg. He came to Eldon as a boy and had lived here ever since. He was married to Miss Grace Cresap in 1904. She survives with a brother, Ed, in Colorado, and three sisters, Miss Laura Friend and Mrs. Audrey Moore of Des Moines and Mrs. W.R. Flint of Eldon.
He was promoted to engineer on the Rock Island in 1903 and had been a railroader for 51 years. He retired in 1937. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, New Hope lodge No. 480, A.F. and A.M., Des Moines consistory of Scottish Rite Masons, Kaaba shrine, Davenport, and the Pension club in Eldon.
The funeral was to be at 2:30 p.m. today at the Campbell funeral home here, with the Rev. H.H. Stark in charge. Burial was to be in the Eldon cemetery, with Masonic services at the grave.
