JOHN C. STEEL
**Handwritten: 1944John Clement Steele, son of George T. and Ruth Steele, was born November 23, 1858, at Bentonsport, Iowa, and passed away at his home in Douds January 18, 1944. He had been a resident of Van Buren County all his life except for a short time in his early youth spent in Bloomington, Illinois.
On September 12, 1883, he was united in marriage to Martha A. Likes. Four children were born to this marriage. Mrs. A?a Loar of Troy, James W. of Keosauqua, Anna Brewer, who passed away in 1923, and Harry E. of Douds. His wife preceded him in death July 11, 1943. He made his home with his son, Harry and wife who tenderly cared for him in his illness. He is survived by three children, eleven grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren, one brother, Charles Steele of Libby, Montana, and a number of other relatives. He was a member of the Providence Baptist church and was a faithful attendant as long as services were held there.
He was always ready to assist in time of sickness, or in any way he could as long as he was able. He will long be remembered by all his neighbors.
Services were held Wednesday January 19, 1944 at 2:00 p.m. at the Pedrick Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. C.S. Carroll of West Burlington. Music was by Mrs. Mable Finney, Mrs. Beulah Pedrick, Mrs. Lizzie Pollock, pianist. Pallbearers were J.S. Russell, Harve Russell, Ed Buckles, George Saylor, Wayne Smith, Delmer Plowman. Interment was in the Lebanon cemetery.
