MR. AND MRS. NUTT DIE FROM INJURIES

Deaths Resulted From Injuries Received In An Auto Wreck

Austin Nutt died on the afternoon of Christmas day and his wife on the afternoon of the day following from injuries received on Dec. 18th while they were en route to Ottumwa with some clothing for the Salvation army.

The accident occurred just west of the Sugar creek bridge east of Ottumwa when the car which they had been driving collided with a car driven by T.D. Bell, a Des Moines radio salesman, who was accompanied by Myrl Bensmiller of Ottumwa, both of whom were also injured, and both cars were demolished in the crash.

Mr. Nutt was born in Douds and had lived there most of his life. He and his wife made their home on a farm two miles north of Douds. His age was 53. He was an active member of the Mt. Moriah Methodist church and was president of the board of education of the Douds-Leando consolidated schools.

He is survive by two daughters, Mrs. Van Green of Douds and Mrs. Lily Martz of Des Moines; his mother, Mrs. Owen Nutt, a widow living near Selma; one brother, E. Nutt, also of Selma; and a nephew, Thomas Nutt of Burlington.

Mrs. Nutt, who was forty-eight years old, is survived by the two children above mentioned, also by three sisters, Mrs. Effie Mechem of Mt. Zion, Mrs. Belle Lewis of Selma, and Mrs. Mary Cramblet of Monroia, Calif., and three brothers, D.N. Overturf of Selma, Ben Overturff of Monrovia, Calif., and Simon Overturff, Ottumwa. Mr. and Mrs. Nutt are also survived by one grand daughter, Maxine Louise Green of Douds.

Mrs. Nutt lived near Selma and Douds all her life and she also was a member of the Mt. Moriah Methodist church.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon from the Mt. Moriah M.E. country church. It was the largest attended service ever held in the community, where Mr. and Mrs. Nutt were life long residents and active workers in the church where they held membership.

The Rev. C.R. Rowe of Chillicothe, a former pastor, preached the funeral sermon, and he paid high tribute to the lives of this worthy couple. He was assisted by Rev. J.C. Austin of Keosauqua, who read the scripture text, the 14th chapter of St. John. Rev. G.W. Barber of Eldon offered prayer, and the two obituaries were ready by the local pastor, Rev. P.O. Cline. Music was furnished by members of the Mt. Moriah church choir and the floral offerings were many and beautiful.

Pall bearers for Mrs. Nutt were chosen from among her neighbors, and for Mr. Nutt were the members of the Douds consolidated school board of which Mr. Nutt was president. The funeral director was Clarence Pedrick of Douds, assisted by W.A. Davidson, funeral director of Batavia. Interments were made in two graves, place closely together in Mt. Moriah cemetery.
