ALDEN L. DOUD
**Handwritten: "61" and "61"Alden L. Doud, son of A. Lincoln and Cynthia Alice Loring Doud, was born Aug. 13, 1897 at Douds, and departed this life Monday, Aug. 28, at University hospital in Iowa City.
He was the grandson of one of the founders of the town of Douds, and had lived most of his life there.
On June 29, 1930, he was married to Edna May Bralliar at Richland, Ia. She survives, as does their son, Alden Lowell Doud of Washington, D.C.; two sisters, Mrs. Hazel Arnold, St. Paul, Minn., and Mrs. Edna Scott, Cupertino, Calif., one niece, four nephews; and aunt, Mrs. Melissa Harwood, Texarkana, Tex.; Several cousins, other relatives and many friends.
Mr. Doud attended grade schoo(l) at Douds, was graduated from Keosauqua high school in 1914 and from Iowa Wesleyan college in 1918. He attended the University of Iowa. He was a member of Beta Theta Pi social fraternity and Delta Theta Phi law fraternity, and of the order of Coif, legal scholastic honor society.
In 1918 and 1919, he was assistant cashier of the National State Bank at Mt. Pleasant, and in 1920-21 he taught high school at Moravia.
In 1924, he established his law practice at Douds, and became widely known as an attorney. In 1930, he was elected National Secretary of Delta Theta Phi law fraternity and had held that position continuously since. In 1939, he was President of the Professional Interfraternity Conference. He was past president of the Douds Board of Education, and was a Trustee of Iowa Wesleyan college.
Mr. Doud had a keen interest in civic and political affairs, and was an active Republican Party leader. He had served as chairman of the Van Buren County Central Committee and a delegate to national conventions of the party. he had represented Van Buren County in the Iowa House of Representatives and the Van Buren-Jefferson County District in the Iowa Senate. He was a leader in War Bond Sales during World War II, and was an active member of the Douds Community Club. At the time of his death he was president of the Van Buren County Bar Assn. He was a past president of the Second Iowa Judicial District Bar Asss., and a member of the Iowa and American Bar Associations.
Mr. Doud was active in Masonic circles, having served as Worshipful Master of Celestial Lodge No. 413, Douds, and High Priest of Moore Chapter No. 23 at Keosauqua. He was a member of El Chanan Commandery No. 28 at Keosauqua Damascus Council No. 36, Mt. Pleasant, Zarapath Consistory and Kaaba Shrine, both of Davenport.
He was also a Past Chancellor of Starlight Lodge No. 350 Knights of Phythias at Douds and was a member of Fairfield Lodge No. 1192, B.P.O.E.
Funeral services were held Thursday, Aug. 31, 1961 at 2 p.m. at the Pedrick Funeral home in Douds. Clergymen officiating were Dr. J. Raymond Chadwick, President of Iowa Wesleyan College and Rev. Lowell Hoyle, Douds Methodist Pastor. Interment was in the Mt. Moriah cemetery near Douds with Masonic rites by Celestial Lodge No. 413, Douds.
