**Handwritten: 1952Edward F. Pittman was born June 15, 1871 at Peeksville, Mo., son of Stephen Bates and Nancy Jane Douglas Pittman.
When he was three years old, the family moved to a farm near Cantril, Iowa.
He attended the Gem City Business College at Quincy, Ill. and taught in the rural schools of Van Buren county, Iowa. He was clerk of the District Court in Keosauqua from 1901 through 1909.
In January, 1918, he was appointed superintendent of the newspaper division of the state historical building in Des Moines and was dean of historical workers when he retired Jan. 1, 1952.
He was member of the First Presbyterian church in Des Moines.
He leaves to mourn his passing his wife, Mertis; two daughters, Mrs. Mabel Mounce, Clinton, Iowa, Mrs. Dorothy Edwards, Des Moines; a son, Claude E. of Des Moines; a step-son, Rolla V. Barker, Red Feather Lakes, Colo.; eight grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Nora Glascock, Medford, Oregon, Mrs. Josie Harryman, Cantril, Iowa; and a brother, Clyde L. of Upland, Calif. Two daughters and a grandson preceded him in death.
Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon in the Methodist church in Cantril in charge of the Rev. Murphy of Des Moines assisted by the Rev. Harold Harryman, local pastor. Burial was in Cantril cemetery. Singers were George, Bird and Willie Cupp of Fairfield, brothers of Mrs. Pittman. Accompanist Mrs. Charles Campbell of Mt. Zion. Pallbearers were Glen Rowe, Art Evans, Arnold Barker, Hugh Barker, Glen Cupp and Lester Cupp.
