THOMAS EDWARD SYFERT
Thomas Edward Syfert, son of Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Syfert, was born in Van Buren county, Iowa, April 6, 1862, and departed this life at his home in Birmingham Nov. 17, 1940, at 11 p.m. at the age of 78 years, 7 months and 11 days.
He was united in marriage to Mary Rebecca Sherod Jan. 26, 1888, and to this union were born four children-two sons and two daughters, three of whom preceded their father and mother in death. Pearl passed away March15, 1897, Leo on Dec. 23, 1918, Walter on March 29, 1935, and their mother August 30, 1935.
One daughter, Mrs. Edith Reneker of Birmingham, is the only surviving member of the immediate faily(err), together with her husband, Glenn Reneker, and four grandchildren, Darrell, Darlene, Danny and Mary Lee Reneker, and a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Hazel Syfert and two son, Robert and Carl, of Blandinsville, Ill.
He was married to Mrs. Bertha M. Boley June 8, 1937, who also survives.
He was the last of a family of six children, Mrs. Ellen Loofbourrow, Mrs. Ellen Grieves, Isaac, George, and Joseph preceded him in death, as did three half-brothers and one step-sister, there remaining one half-sister, Mrs. Allie Kisling, and one half-brother, James Syfert, and one step-sister, Mrs. Lenora Morris of Mt. Pleasant.
He was a member of the Presbyterian church at Birmingham and held the office of Trustee in the church for many years.
He was a farmer by occupation all of his life until he retired and moved to Birmingham in 1923, but still kept up his farm interests until failing health and advancing years caused him to slow down. He had been in failing health for the last fourteen months and seriously ill for the past eight weeks following a stroke. Mr. Syfert was a good neighbor and a true friend and was ever ready to lend a helping hand to those in need. He was a great friend of children and never failed to give them a kind ...
