Dr. S.H. Baumann Dies At Age 100

BIRMINGHAM - Dr. Samuel Henry Baumann, who observed his 100th birthday last Aug. 14, died at midnight Thursday in the Crawford nursing home, west of Fairfield. He had been in failing health for two years, and had been a resident of the nursing home since his health began to fail.

Dr. Baumann was the oldest living ex-member of the Iowa state legislature, in which he served from 1907 to 1917. He was also a former mayor of Birmingham.

A native of Zwingle, Baumann was the son of Frederick and Elizabeth Cort Baumann. He was graduated from the Chicago Veterinary college in 1892 and settled in Birmingham in 1897. he practiced veterinary medicine for sixty years before his retirement.

Baumann was a member of the Birmingham Presbyterian church, which he had served as elder and Sunday school teacher. He was also a member of the Masonic lodge, the IOOF and the Knights of Pythias. In June of 1881 he was married to Myrtie G. Morse, at LaMotte. She died in April of 1931.

Surviving are a son and three daughters: Fred Baumann, Birmingham; Mrs. Florence Campbell, Mount Zion; Mrs. Ruth Graham, Berkeley, Calif., and Mrs. Rachel Dwyer, of Blue Springs, Mo.

Also surviving are a brother and two sisters: The Rev. A.B. Baumann, Rockville, Md.; Mrs. Meta Mathes, Wadsworth, Ohio, and Mrs. Mabel Dauer, of Canton, Ohio, 18 grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. A son, a daughter, two brothers and three sisters died previously.

Last rite will be held at the Birmingham Presbyterian church at 2 p.m. Sunday. Dr. Howard C. Irvine will officiate, and burial will be in Maple Hill cemetery.

The body is at the Burch-Catcott (Funeral home.)
