Eliab Doud

On Saturday morning last death claimed another old citizen, one who 25 or 30 years ago was one of the most prominent men in the county. Eliab Doud was born in Luzerne county, Penn., Oct. 16, 1812, being at the time of his death nearly 87 years old. When he was six years old his people moved to Hamilton county, Ohio, and he was educated at Greenville college in that state. In 1837 he became a school teacher in Kentucky, and in 1843 – 56 years ago – came to this county, where he ever afterward resided. When the K. & D. M. railroad was built he and his brother David laid out the town of Douds, and were the proprietors of the name. Mr. Doud was a justice of the peace 13 to 18 years. From 1866 to 1870 he was a state senator. During that time he voted for the ratification of the 14th and 15th amendments to the federal constitution. He was also the author of the Doud amendment to a railroad bill, which amendment was the first assertion in our state of the power of the state to regulate railroad tariffs, which proposition has since been enacted into law and has been sustained by the United States supreme court.

Mr. Doud was not only a man of ability, but he was a man of high character. In 1847 he was married to Mary J. Whitten, and was the father of 11 children. Mrs. Doud died some years since. Mr. Douds death came from a giving out of the vital forces as the result of old age. His funeral was held Monday afternoon, the Rev. B. F. Shane officiating. The interment was at Mt. Moriah cemetery.
