MRS. JOHN SMITH

Mary Jane Shaffer, the eldest daughter of Jacob and Anna Shaffer, was born in Chequest township April 23, 1878 and has lived most of her life in this neighborhood. She was called to her heavenly home April 27, 1933 at the Ottumwa hospital after a short illness, at the age of 55 years and 4 days.

She was united in marriage to John Smith November 10, 1900. To this union six children were born.

She was converted and joined the Brethren church at the age of 12. She kept her faith and lived close to her Savior throughout her life.

She received her education in the rural schools and attended the Keosauqua high school after which she taught for several years.

She leaves to mourn their loss, her husband and the following children, Kermit of Douds, Mrs. Emma Harryman of Douds, Mrs. Beatrice Robinson of Cantril, John Junior, Donna, and Elizabeth at home, and five grandchildren. She is also survived by her aged parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.E. Shaffer and three sisters, Mrs. Bertrum Nason, Miss Mae Shaffer, and Mrs. Harvey Harryman, all of Douds. Two brothers preceded her in death.

She was a helpful companion, a kind and loving mother, a trustful daughter and sister, and will be greatly missed by many other relatives and friends.

Surely a Christian woman and a Godly mother has gone.

"Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God." Matt. 5:8.

The funeral was at the home Saturday at 1:30 p.m.. Burial was at Leandon cemetery. The services were conducted by M.D. Wyatt, assisted by Earl Chader.
