FORMER MAYOR AND COMMUNITY LEADER CALLED

Had Been Master Of Masonic Lodge On Different Occasions For Total of 12 Years.

Eldon. -- William H. Stauffer, 82, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. R.H. Freeark of Chicago, at 11 p.m. Saturday.

Mr. Stauffer had operated a bakery here for 58 years until his retirement two years ago. He had lived in Eldon 60 years.

Mr. Stauffer went to Chicago about two weeks ago to visit his daughter and suffered a stroke May 3. He was born in Harmony, Pa., June 13, 1856, and was married to Miss Annie Andrus at Keokuk November 19, 1884, and to this union seven children were born.

He was a member of the Eldon Congregational church and was made a Mason in New Hope lodge No. 480 in 1894. He served as master of this lodge for a total of 12 years on different occasions.

He was mayor of Eldon from 1900 to 1904 and had served on the city council before becoming mayor. He also had served on the Eldon school board.

He was preceded in death by an infant son and is survived by his wife, Annie; four sons, William J. Stauffer of Minneapolis, Sidney I. Stauffer of Seattle, H. Lee Stauffer of Evanston, Ill., and Don R. Stauffer of Ft. Dodge, two daughters, Mrs. Guy Lambert of Newton and Mrs. R.H. Lambert of Newton and Mrs. R.H. Freeark of Chicago; and 13 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at the Campbell funeral home in Eldon in charge of the Rev. E.M. Gregson. Burial will be in the Eldon cemetery.
