JOHN C. SALTER
John Calvin, son of Asa T. and Ruth A. Salter, was born in Leando Oct. 18, 1872, and grew to manhood in that community. He was married to Miss Essie Grimsley in the autumn of 1894. To them were born one son, Kelsie of Ottumwa. On November 2nd, 1904, he was married to Miss Lillie Cartu, and to this union were born nine children: Theodore, Asa, Bennie, Lala, Fred, Glen, Carl, Ruth and Florence, all at home. His father and two sisters preceded him in death. His mother, Mrs. Ruth James, one brother, Ben Salter of Leando; two grandchildren, and many other relatives and friends, mourn with the wife and children his departure. He had been failing health for about three months. He was taken to the Ottumwa hospital on Saturday where he passed away Tuesday, May 25, at 5:30 p.m., aged 53 years, 7 months and 7 days.
Funeral services were held in the Leando M.E. church Thursday at 11 a.m., conducted by Rev. W.J. Hamilton. Burial was made in the Leando cemetery.
