Charles R. Hanshaw was born in Van Buren County, May 19, 1858, and departed this life at his home in Ottumwa, July 8, 1930. He lived the greater part of his life in the vicinity of his birth. He is survived by hs(sp) wife Ella; five daughters, Mrs. Al Lasley of Milton; Mrs. Earl Parks of Mt. Pleasant; Mrs. W.G. Parsons of Fairfield; Mrs. Omar Coffman of Ottumwa; and Mrs. Frank Brown of St. Joseph, Mo.; and two sons: Glen of St. Joseph, Mo.; and Carol of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; three stepsons, Marion Marts of Cheyenne; Alfred Marts and Harvey Marts of Ottumwa; and five brothers: T.J. Hanshaw of Ottumwa; Grant and Elmer Hanshaw of Douds; Kine Hanshaw of Seldon, Kansas, and Al Hanshaw of Mo. Two sons, Charley Wesley and Carol Goodwin have preceded him to the great beyond.

The last eight years he has lived in Ottumwa. Many years ago, Brother Hanshaw became a Christian and became a member of the Free Methodist Church at Bethel. The things of the Christian life were very real to him and he has remained constant in his faith throughout the years. he had a profound faith in prayer and an unwavering faith in his Saviour(sp). His Christian experience manifested itself in a beautiful way in all the reaches of home and community life. The summons came unexpectedly and he was ready to be unshered into the presence of his Saviour(sp) and the loved ones who had gone on before. Of him we may confidently assert, he has fought the good fight, he has finished the course, he has kept the faith. He has gone but his memory and good works live after him.
