Ralph Johnston rites Monday

BIRMINGHAM - Ralph M. Johnston, 91, died at 7:20 a.m. today at Parkview Care Center in Fairfield, where he had lived since April 10, 1982.

Services are set tentatively for 2 p.m. Monday at Burch-Raymond funeral Home in Birmingham. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery at Birmingham. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials have been established to Birmingham United Presbyterian Church and the Parkview Activity Fund.

Johnston was born June 30, 1896 in Jefferson County, the son of Ruben and Mary McKee Johnston. He lived his entire life in the Birmingham community, where he farmed. He retired in 1974 and moved to a home in Birmingham United Presbyterian Church and Van Buren County Historical Society. He married Ava Clark Nov. 6, 1917 at the home of her parents, the Lester Clarks. She died Jan. 17, 1984. A son and two brothers also preceded him in death.

Surviving are three sons, Donald of Fairfield, Wesley of Burlington, Charles of Pittsburgh, Pa.; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Roberta Mahon of Birmingham and Mary Elson of Vinton.
