Obituary of Jerry M. Morrow

Jeremiah M. Morrow, eldest son of Albert and Sarah Ann Morrow, was born on a farm near Douds, Van Buren county, Iowa, Feb. 21, 1854. He departed this life at his home in Douds, Iowa, Nov. 17, 1926, aged 72 years, 8 months and 26 days. His parents were natives of Belmont county, Ohio, and early pioneers of Iowa. His early education was in common rural education was in common rural schools and later, in Keosauqua high school and Birmingham Academy. He taught school and worked in a store for several years. In 1882 he engaged in general mercantile business at Douds, Iowa, and continued the same until 1917.

In 1918 he was elected representative from Van Buren county, and was a member of the 38th General Assembly. He voted for the ratification of both the Woman suffrage and the Prohibition laws, and helped pass the first good roads law. After completing his term as representative, he was appointed State Food Inspector in Dairy and Food Department, and served four years until June first, 1923, when he retired.

In religion he was a member of the M.E. church, in which he was a faithful member and in politics he was a republican. Among the fraternal organizations of which he was a member was the Masonic order, having attained to the rank of Knights Templar, and the Mystic Shrine; also the I.O.O.F. and the Knights of Pythias.

He was married to Alice E. Chalfant, daughter of Milton Chalfant, Oct. 2, 1878. Two daughters and three sons were born to them. Nellie, the oldest, daughter resides in Walla Walla, Wash. Bessie, the second daughter, died in 1915. The three sons all live in Des Moines, Iowa. Roscoe, the eldest, has been employed more than 20 years in the Peoples Savings Bank, and Jay in the life Insurance business; Harry is a dentist, a graduate from the State University of Iowa. The two younger sons participated in the World War; Jay was a Sergeant in the Areo Squadron. Harry was a yeoman in the Navy.

He leaves to mourn their loss his faithful wife, one daughter, three sons, two grandchildren.

The funeral services took place from his late home on Thursday, Nov. 18, 1926, Rev. G.W. Barber of Eldon conducting the service.
