MARTIN HORNBAKER

Martin Hornbaker, son of Benjamin and Elizabeth Hornbaker, was born March 11, 1845, at Preble county, Ohio, and departed this life May 4, 1927, at the home near Bonaparte. He was united in marriage to Sarah Tompkins March 10, 1869, who preceded him in death Oct. 23, 1915. To this union were born 3 sons, Marion, Orlando and Clarence. Orlando passed away July 17, 1916, at his home in Belgrade, Mont.

Mr. Hornbaker's health began failing in November, 1926, and his last sickness was of several weeks duration.

He enlisted in the Union army in Company I, 19th Regiment, Iowa Vol. Infantry, under Capt. G.E. Payne, August 14, 1862, where he was wounded by gunshot in right hip and left shoulder and was confined in hospital for some time, then returning to his company until the was ceased. He was honorably discharged at New Orleans Oct. 29, 1864.

In late years he cherished these memories and always enjoyed the G.A.R. encampments and visits to the old battle fields.

His greatest desire was to work in his garden and orchards, and maintain the things he had enjoyed at the old home the past 80 years.

He leaves to mourn their loss the two sons, Marion F. and Clarence H.; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, besides several nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.

The funeral was conducted at the late home May 6, 1927, at 2 o'clock, in charge of Rev. Droz of Bonaparte. Interment in Thompson cemetery, beside the wife and son.

The pall bearers were members of the American Legion, Ben Sloan, Carl Wilson, Howard Stevens, Ed. Cummins, J.A. Chipman, and Albert Miller, with George L. Simmons, bugler, sounding taps at the grave.

It is sad that one we cherish
Should be taken from our home,
But, the joys that do not perish
Live in Memory alone.
All the years we've spent together,
All the happy, golden hours,
Shall be cherished in remembrance,
Fragrant sweets from Memory's flowers.
