SAD DEATH OF FRED W. GREEF.
In Bentonsport and other parts of Van Buren county there are many friends who will be deeply pained to hear of the sad death of Fred W. Greef of Pittsburg, Kansas. This even occurred at one o'clock Saturday afternoon, September 12, 1896. For seven weeks he suffered with intestinal fever, most of the time very near the gates of death. Constantly under the care of excellent physicians and skilled nurses, hope was entertained that his life might be saved.
Two weeks ago an unfavorable change was observed, after which he gradually grew worse and all hope was abandoned. On Friday last N.G. Brown and wife, of Bentonsport, parents of Mrs. Greef, were summoned by telegram and left on Saturday at 10 o'clock a.m., but reached the stricken home after death had entered.
Funeral services were held at two o'clock Monday afternoon and the body interred at Pittsburg, Kan. Besides his wife and four children, he leaves a mother, one sister and three brothers to lament his early death.
Having no data for guide it is impossible to give a full obituary notice. Fred W. Greef, son of H.F. Greef and wife, was born in Bentonsport, Van Buren county, Iowa, was reared there, and married Miss Hattie Brown of the same village. For years he was engaged in the mercantile and banking business with his uncle Julius Greef. In the spring of 1895, the two families moved from Bentonsport, and joined other relatives at Pittsburg, Kansas, and continued the banking business there.
In death this good son, his mother suffers a double affliction, as it has been less than two years ago since her youngest son George died and was brought to Bentonsport for interment beside his father. In Bentonsport the whole community extends sympathy to the stricken families.
