DEATH OF POSTMASTER OF BENTONSPORT
Again the bugle call has sounded in our midst and another comrade and friend has answered the summons of the Great Commander, not to join the line of march to meet an opposing army of the enemy, but only to meet the one enemy whom all must meet ere they stand in review before the Great General of all, who has stood at the head of the line, leading him on to fight the battle of life for the many years that are passed. These last orders were not for him to "shoulder arms" (as in the old day half a century ago, when the weary feet, after long marches, almost refused to support the tired body,) but to by down his arms and enter his well earned rest. His weary heart gladly responded to the summons feeling that his marching days, for this life, were over.
Henry Fulton was born on a farm near Columbus, Ohio, Jan. 12, 1836, and lacked but one day of 77 years at the time of his death. He was one of a family of seven children and is survived by three sisters and two brothers, George of Indianapolis, Ind., William of Vancouver, Wash., Mrs. Kate Duncan, Oklahoma City, Okla., Mrs. Lucia Liter, Dwight, Ill., and Mrs. Elizabeth Sutherland, Herrington, Kan.
He was united in marriage to Catherine Moon Feb. 16, 1862, who passed away March 6, 1911. To this union were born six children, all except James, who died Feb. 10, 1912, were present with their families at the funeral. He leaves 12 grandchildren, all of whom were very dear to him, and very much attended to "Grandpa" in return.
The early years of Mr. Fulton's life were passed working in the paper mill, then one of the solid business interests at Bentonsport, he coming to Iowa with George and James Green to build the paper mill. This was in 1851. Mr. Fulton entered the service of his country in 1864, in which he served in Co. I, 13th Iowa.
After the war he became a trusted employe of the C.R.I. & P., running one of the first locomotives on the old K.D. as fireman for Samuel W. Wakefield, now of Keokuk, and served for many years as engineer.
His later years were spent in the postoffice at Bentonsport, and although of a very quiet retiring disposition he made many friends ..... his kindness and willingness, to oblige, and where he was ab...onded and assisted by his daughter, Miss Minnie, who since the death of the wife and mother has been his faithful, and untiring nurse and housekeeper, and her many friends extend their heartfelt sympathy to her and to all his children to whom he was ever a kind and affectionate father; and also to the sisters and brothers, only one of whom was privileged to be present on this sad occasion. While his friends have felt for a long time that his days were numbered, it has been a matter of surprise that his wonderful vitality enabled him to withstand the advance of the grim messenger for so many times in the year that has past.
While daily seeing the patience with which he has borne his weakness and suffering and missing him out of their home and their lives as they must, those dear ones who have ministered to him so lovingly cannot wish that he was so ready and willing to go, and they knew that "Life is ever Lord of death and love can never lose its own."
The funeral services were conducted at the family home on Monday afternoon, Jan. 13 by Rev. Schillerstrom of the Presbyterian church, assisted by the comrades of Shriver Post and he was laid to rest beside his loved ones, where "the snow like a sheeted pail" covered their resting place.
