MRS. ELIZABETH S. JOHNSTON.
On Sunday, May 12, 1901, Mrs. Elizabeth S. Johnston, wife of the late Stephen B. Johnston, died at her home three-fourths of a mile west of Utica, where she had resided continuously since her marriage to Stephen B. Johnston, August 5, 1846-fifty-five years ago, when but little of the prairie lands of Van Buren county had been touched by a plow or the hand of cultivation. Her husband died almost two years ago, and of the nine children born to them, seven are living, all of whom were privileged to be present at the funeral of the loved mother, as was her sister, Eliza, who was her companion during the last years of her life and was at her side, doing all that loving hands could do, when death took her soul away.
Mrs. Johnston was born in Decatur county, Indiana, March 17, 1826, and came to this county with her parents in 1842, making her age 75 years, 1 month and 25 days. In 1882 she united with the Free Will Baptist church at Utica, of which she remained a consistent member the balance of her life. She was a good woman. All loved Mrs. Johnston who knew her. She was devoted to her home, her husband and her children. The children, the sister and neighbors will miss her. She died peacefully, and she was apparently in good health, enjoying life until after she retired to bed Friday night May 10, when a stroke of paralysis came that rendered her unconscious, death resulting at 10 a.m. the following Sunday. She was buried at the side of her husband at Miller's Chapel cemetery, May 14, in the presence of a large concourse of friends.
