A telegram came Friday afternoon from her husband announcing the death of Mrs. Maggie E. Bartle, nee Sutherland, at her home in Augusta, Oklahoma. The news will be received with pain and surprise in this city where she had so many friends and associates.
She was born in Keokuk, January 23, 1878, and was reared in this city. She passed through the Keokuk public schools and was married here on August 12, 1896, to Dr. Phillip J. Bartle. They moved to Hoisington, Kansas, later to Pawnee Rock, and still later to Augusta, Oklahoma, where they have built up a large and successful practice. They had just finished building an elegant home, into which they moved about last Christmas.
Mrs. Bartle had many warm friends in Keokuk, other than her family relations, to whom the announcement of her death comes as a shock and a deep personal loss. Her sunny, cheerful, happy dispostion attracted her school chums and church and Sunday school associates to her in permanent loving friendship. Her enthusiasm was contagious, her love was without dissimilation and her live without blame. She hated only sin and sham. In her death, a bright young life has gone out into the larger and better world leaving desolate the places it once brightened. Sympathy, that balm to sore and wounded hearts, is extended to her parents who are left to gather together the broken threads of life and weave anew, with the brightest strand missing.
