Mrs. Ellen McElroy Bailey, a civil war widow, was born in McConnellsville, Morgan county, Ohio, Feb. 9, 1843. With her parents she came to Iowa in 1856 and located at Farmington, where she lived at home until married to Mr. W. Sanford Bailey in 1865, soon after he was honorably discharged from the army. They were married in Keokuk. He died December 13, 1885.

Since that time she had lived alone. She raised one foster daughter, Annie Bailey, who was married to Wm. Lowery. She also died in 1885. Thus she was doubly bereft.

In her younger years Mrs. Bailey professed her faith in Christ and became a member of the Farmington Baptist church, and has continued in communion and fellowship with that church until death called her to the fellowship beyond. she had a lingering illness, beginning in August, and increasing in intensity until eight weeks ago she was compelled to take to her bed. Since that time she had been skillfully and carefully nursed by her brother John McElroy, and Mrs. Cassidy.

Death came to her release at 6:40 p.m. December 27, 1921, at the age of 78 years, 10 months and 18 days. There remains to mourn her death, one sister, Rebecca Rhodes, of Loveland, Colo.; one brother, John McElroy, of Farmington, and a half-sister, Mrs. Drucilla Climie, of Yale, Okla, and many nephews and nieces, along with a host of friends.

By her personal request no flowers were used at the funeral. The funeral services were held at the Baptist church at 2:00 p.m. December 29, the pastor, Rev. J.A. Cochran being in charge. Elder James McKiernan preached the sermon. Interment was in the Farmington cemetery.
