Death of Mrs. James Fickey.
About 2 o'clock Saturday morning, Februry 2, 1918, Mrs. James L. Fickey died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. C.C. Rowley and husband, in Keosauqua, Iowa, of cancer of the lower bowels, aged 66 years, 8 months and 22 days. Just twelve weeks following the death of her husband, she was laid to rest in the grave at his side.
Her maiden name was Melissa Smith and she was born in Pennsylvania, May 10, 1851. She came to Iowa and Van Buren county when five years old. On January 27, 1869, she was united in marriage with James L. Fickey, whose death is above mentioned. To them were born four children, Archibald, Mary, Walter and Emma, the first two dying when young, Walter and Emma living. Walter could not be at the funeral as he is in the hospital in Charles City, Iowa, in a serious condition, the result of an operation for appendicitis.
She was married in Keosauqua and has lived here and in this locality since, where she was held in high esteem by all her acquaintances. She was a member of the Methodist church. She was a dutiful wife, a loving mother and a kind neighbor. Everybody liked Mrs. Fickey and she will be missed in the town where she has resided these many years. The bereaved daughter and son and other relatives have the sincere sympathy of their acquaintances.
Funeral services were held at her daughter's home at 3 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 3, conducted by Rev. C.E. Perkins of the Congregational church, assisted by Rev. Monkman of the M.E. church. Burial was in the Purdom cemetery, the pall bearers being, J.C. Strickling, Emory Plowman, Dr. J.A. Craig, Walter Beer, Harry Beer and Roland B. Rowley.
