Hector Everett DeHart, ??? born in Vernon township, Van Buren county, Iowa, January 6, 1872, and departed this life after a brief illness at his home in Keosauqua, Iowa, December 22, 1927, aged 55 years, 11 months and 15 days. He grew to manhood in the place of his birth, going through the schools and all the incidents peculiar to the youth. On December 22, 1896, he was united in marriage to Miss Iona Wolford. To this union, two sons, Dwight and Delmar and a daughter Gera Margaret who died when but a little over a year of age.
Mr. and Mrs. DeHart went to housekeeping on the old DeHart farm in Henry township and became a part of the social and religious life of the community. On June 30, 1918, he was called upon to give up his companion in death, and her memory, as a monument to her, gave more than $1,000 to establish a church in China in Bro. Eyestone's district. He has also been interested in the cause of education, sending a Chinese boy through school in one of the mission schools in China. He believed and practiced that his business was God's business and that part of the proceeds belong to God.
On October 13, 1921, he was again united in marriage to Miss Mabel Saunderson, of Keosauqua, to this union one son, Daniel Saunderson, was born. In the fall of 1924 they moved from the farm to Keosauqua, where he immediately found much to do in the civic life of the town and the religious life of the church. At his death he was the teacher of the Bible class and assistant superintendent of the M.E. Sunday school; also had been a member of the Keosauqua school board for the past years. Bro. DeHart became a Christian in early life and lived and exemplified the truths of Chrisitanity throughout his entire life. So much so, that when any one wanted to know the Christian standared on any question they always said: "We will ask Hec. De Hart." He was a member of the Center Chapel M.E. church for a number of years, but on coming to Keosauqua transferred his membership here.
He leaves to mourn his going, his devoted wife, three sons, George Dwight, Delmar Wolford, and Daniel Saunderson; two grandsons, Blaine and Joe DeHart, all of Keosauqua, and a sister, Mrs. Will Gaston, of Mt. Sterling, Iowa. These together with many more distant relatives and friends will miss the life and influence of a good man.
Funeral services were held at the Center Chapel M.E. church Saturday afternoon, December 24, at 2 o'clock. The following ministers were present and took some part in the services: J.C. Bruvold, of Mt. Sterling; M.F. Campbell, of Pittsburg, H.F. Gilbert of Miton; M.D. Cox, of Keosauqua, and G.H. Smith, former pastor at Center Chaple preaching the sermon.
