DEATH OF MRS. DR. BOTOM

Hulda, daughter of Abel and Roxcinda Neal, was born in a pioneer home on Vernon Prairie, Van Buren county, Iowa, May 9, 1845, the eldest of a family of 10 children. In this home she learned the value of frugality and industry, principles and characteristic of her life work.

On May 28, 1871, she was united in marriage to Joseph Ward, whose death from accidental drowning occurred at Bentonsport, September 7, 1881. With six small children she assumed the great responsibility of rearing, educating and providing the necessiries of life to her little brood. How well she succeeded the noble sons and daughters who are here today in a loving tribute to "mother" testify and with the exception of the youngest daughter, Josie, who passed away January 21, 1903, resided near and returned in great measure the love and devotion bestowed upon them.

December 26, 1902, she was united in marriage to Dr. Botom of Acasto, Mo., where they resided until 1909, then located at Farmington where she passed to rest Sunday, November 11, 1917, aged 72 years, 6 months and 2 days. Mrs. Botom was a faithful member of the Vernon M.E. church from 1881 to 1908, her membership being transferred to the Christian church at Mt. Sterling with which she affiliated to the time of her death. Dr. Botom preceded her in death December 21, 1916.

The surviving children are Omer E., Mt. Sterling; Abel A., Troy, Iowa; Roy R., Bentonsport; Perry and Mrs. Emma Boreman, Farmington. Three brothers and four sisters with six grandchildren mourn the passing of a good and noble mother, wife, neighbor and friend. Funeral services were held in the Baptist church after which the remains were buried in the Thompson cemetery near her old home.
