Obituary of Andrew Reed
Andrew Reed, son of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Reed, was born in Wayne county, Ohio, Feb. 25, 1839, and died at Milton, Iowa, Thursday Oct. 18, 1917, aged 78 years, 7 months and 23 days.
When 8 years old he came to Iowa with his parents and was raised near Pittsburg. His father died when he was 18 years old and he aided his mother in providing and caring for a family of five children. He enlisted in the Third Iowa Calvary, Co G, in 1861, among the first to enlist and the last to return. He was injured in his last engagement at Guntown, Miss., from which cause he had poor health the rest of his life and the cause of his death finally.
He was married to Iola Nagle, April 22, 1873. To this union 7 children were born of whom one died in infancy. Zeruah Casady, Agnes Blaine, Shirley LeBaron, Dr. George Reed, John M. Reed and Robert C. Reed are the surviving children.
He was a member of the Order of the Odd Fellows and served in all positions of honor in the order. He had made Past Noble Grand. His membership was at Bentonsport, and he was a member for 37 years. He was also a member of the Grand Army. He was converted many years ago and united with the Presbyterian church here he joined the Methodist church and was a faithful member till the end. He never swore an oath in his life.
A good soldier, citizen, husband, father, and christian man has gone from us. One trusted and loved by all. We say farewell waiting the eternal gathering.
The funeral was held at the M.E. church Sunday at 11 a.m., conducted by Rev. A.M. Smith. The remains were taken to Cantril for interment. Only one member of the family survives him, Miss Maria Reed, a sister, of Garden City, Kansas. D.O. Reed and wife of Pittsburg; Henry Megrath and wife of Keosauqua; Arnold Barker, of Mt. Zion; Mrs. Frank Ferguson, Mrs. Harry Pittman and Arthur Welch and wife, of Bloomfield; Miss Mabel Kutzner and Earl Kutzner and wife of Brock, Mo., were relatives who attended the funeral. There are 9 surviving grand children.
