Mrs. John McElroy.

Died at Farmington, Iowa, Mrs. Phoebe Jane McElroy daughter of Thomas and Phoebe Millington. She was born April 22nd, 1846, in the state of New York and with her parents came west in 1857 and located on a farm one and a quarter miles west of Farmington and has lived near there all her after life.

She was married to Mr. John McElroy March 29th, 1867. To them were born eight children: three have gone on and wait in paradise to welcome their mother. These are James P., Ella May, and Lotta. The last named died at the age of 29 years. The other two in infancy. Emma Muntz of Mt. Sterling, Iowa; Leona Marriott and Elizabeth Marriott of Bentonsport, Iowa; Frank McElroy of Burlington, Iowa; and Harry McElroy of Clarinda, Iowa; and eighteen grandchildren survive. For several years mother McElroy has been afflicted with partial paralysis that terminated in apoplexy which struck her down very suddenly and while she was at her usual household duties at 5:30 a.m. Aug. 7th, 1914. Soon thereafter she asked her husband to send for the children, then she relapsed into unconsciousness from which she did not recover. At 2 p.m. her life departed thus leaving her husband to travel alone the remainder of lifes journey bereft of the wife of his youth and the children no more to know a mothers glad welcome until she greets them on the threshold of paradise.

Mrs. McElroy was an amiable and exemplary woman, a faithful devoted wife, a kind and loving mother, a general helpful friend and neighbor ever ready with willing hands and sympathetic heart to render assistance to anyone who needed her helpful ministrations.

This community who has known the family for a half century extends in unstinted measure their deepest sympathy to the bereaved husband and grief stricken children and with them sorrow for the departed one.

The funeral service was held in the Farmington Baptist church at 2 p.m. Aug 9th, 1914, Elder Jas. McKiernan in charge. Interment in Farmington cemetery.
