**Handwritten: 1911James Madison Beer, a highly respected resident of the county, died Friday night, March 17, on his farm a couple of miles below Keosauqua, where his home had been since his parents located there in 1836, over 74 years ago, when he was but a few months old. Few white people resided in what is now Van Buren county in 1836. That was 75 years ago, a long ways back, when the Indian, the deer and wild turkey roamed the prairie and the woods. Mrs. Beer died several years ago and the husband was buried at her side in the Fellows cemetery last Sunday afternoon.
Four children suvive, Harry of near Mt. Zion, Charlie of Keokuk, Mrs. Carrie Bell, who with her husband, resides on the home farm, and Walter of Keosauqua. One son, Frank, died serveral years since. Mr. Beer had been in declining health for some time, paralysis afflicting him, the third and fatal stroke coming a few days previous to this death.
He was a member of the Christian denomination and the fuenral was held at the Christian church at 2 o'clock Sunday, Rev. Perkins, assisted by Rev. Field, being in charge of the services, a large concourse of people attending. He was a member of the Odd Fellow and Rebekah lodges and members of those orders attended in a body, accompanying the remains to the cemetery.
