James Thompson Jack was born in McConnellsville, Ohio, July 30, 1842, and died at his home in Ft. Madison, Iowa, May 23, 1909, after a lingering illness with cancer of the stomach, in his 67th year.

He came with his parents to Iowa in 1857, settling in Van Buren county. On Oct. 3, 1872, he was united in marriage to Miss Zerina Shepherd, who departed this life Oct. 17, 1889. To this union were born two children, Nathan Eugene Jack of Ft. Madison, and Mrs. Frank McGavic of Decatur, Ill.

In 1892 he moved to Ft. Madison, where a few years later he was united in marriage to Miss Rachel Martin, who with the two children and three grandchildren and a host of friends, are left to mourn their loss.

In boyhood Mr. Jack became a member of the M.E. church of which he remained an honored and useful member, being a trustee of the First M.C. church of Ft. Madison at the time of his death. During his long illness he was ever patient and kind and when he realized his recovery was impossible, he expressed himself as being ready "When the Lord should call him home."

The funeral was from his home Tuesday evening, conducted by his pastor Rev. Scoldsand and the remaines were taken to Bentonsport Wednesday and interred beside those of his wife, the order of the Odd Fellows, of which he was an honored member for 27 years, having charge of the services there. The floral offerings were many and beautiful.
