Death of Mark Sheppard

Warsaw, Ill., Feb. 10, 1909 - The sad news was received here Sunday, Feb. 7, from Wyoming, Ill., that Henry Markel Sheppard, formerly know by everybody as "Mark," had breathed his last at 8:20 that morning, after an illness of several weeks duration, though he had been ailing all winter but would not give up.

His death was caused by stomach trouble, with heart complications. Mark was genial, kindly man, ever ready with a smile or a joke, and had hosts of friends who will sadly miss him. Mr. Sheppard was born in Bloomington, Ind., Oct. 20, 1847. When a boy of seven years, he removed with his parents, E.D. ("Good") Sheppard and wife, of Keosauqua, Van Buren county, Iowa, where he grew to manhood, and in 1872, at Bentonsport, was united in marriage to Miss Susan A. Shepherd, who bore him two daughters, who survive him.

In 1881, he, with his family, came to Warsaw, where he was for years engaged in business, and was well and favorably known. Several years ago he removed to Wyoming, Ill., the home of his youngest daughter.

He leaves to mourn his loss, his faithful wife, two daughters, Miss Mary Sheppard and Mrs. WillJ. Foster of Wyoming, Ill.; a brother J.M. Sheppard of Ottumwa, Iowa, and three sisters, Mrs. Hattie S. Boyle of New Albany, Indiana, Mrs. Amy L. Wempner of Kansas City, Mo., and Mrs. J.W. Shepherd of Warsaw.

His funeral occured at 2 p.m. to-day from the Methodist church, Rev. P.R. Powers, pastor, officiating. The remains were escorted from the residence of his brother-in-law, J.W. Shepherd, to the church by Warsaw camp, 340, M.W.A. He was buried in Oakland cemetery with Masonic honors. Many beautiful floral offerings bore mute testimony of love and esteem of many friends.
