HUNTER, William: 1842-1910

HUNTER, SMITH, BOSTOCK, VAN AUKEN, HUFF

William Hunter, was born in Clark county, Canada, May, 1842. When a young man he moved with (his) parents to Oxford county, Canada, where he was married Oct. 22, 1868, to Mary Jane Smith. They moved the same year to Van Buren county, Iowa, locating near Bonaparte, where they lived ever since. To them were born seven children, a son dying in infancy. The living children are, Iowa and Nelson Hunter, Mrs. Anna Bostock, Mrs. Carrie Van Auken, Mrs. Jennie Huff, all of this county, and Geo. E. Hunter of San Diego, Calif.

He was an industrious, public-spirited man, willing to do his part whenever his help was needed. Cheerfulness was one of the great points in his character, and this he maintained to a large degree during his afflictions. He was a sufferer from asthma since coming to the States, although years ago dropsy and heart trouble had been part of his affliction. The end came December 12, 1910. He leaves to mourn his departure a wife, six children, eleven grand-children, two brothers and three sisters, besides a host of neighbors and old-time friends.

His parents were Scotch Presbyterian and he always leaned toward the faith of his ancestors, and did not stray far from his youthful training. He made a public profession of faith during a series of meetings held by Evangelist Wilkin a few years ago, but never united with any church. Death throws his mantle over us, and it is dark as we say, "Good night," but it will be brighter when we say "Good morning."

Funeral services were held in the Story Chapel on Thursday, Dec. 15 at 2 p.m., conducted by Rev. Herbert Taylor, pastor of the Presbyterian church at Bonaparte.
